Florida Medical Marijuana Card (MMID)

What is an MMID?

A Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMID) is an official identification document issued by the State of Florida Department of Health that authorizes a qualified patient to legally purchase, possess, and use medical cannabis products from licensed dispensaries.

Requirements for MMID Eligibility

1. Florida Residency

You must be a Florida resident. Documentation required:

  • Valid Florida driver's license, OR
  • State ID, OR
  • Proof of Florida residency AND valid photo ID

2. Medical Certification

Must be certified by a qualified physician (like Dr. Monroe) who determines that you have a qualifying condition and that medical cannabis may be medically beneficial.

3. Age

You must be at least 18 years old. Minors (under 18) can qualify only with parental consent and documented legal guardianship.

4. No Disqualifying Factors

Certain disqualifications may apply. Consult with Dr. Monroe about any concerns regarding your eligibility.

Qualifying Medical Conditions

To obtain an MMID, you must have a documented medical condition. Florida's medical marijuana law recognizes many conditions. Below are the commonly accepted qualifying conditions:

Chronic Pain

Long-term pain conditions that significantly affect quality of life and functional capacity. One of the most common qualifying conditions.

Cancer

Malignant neoplasm of the brain, its membranes, or spinal cord; metastatic cancer; or chemotherapy-induced conditions.

Epilepsy

Seizure disorders that are difficult to control with conventional medications, or severe seizure syndromes like Dravet Syndrome.

Multiple Sclerosis

Chronic neurological disorder with associated spasticity, pain, and mobility issues.

HIV/AIDS

Human immunodeficiency virus or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, particularly for appetite and symptom management.

PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder with documented symptoms and medical history supporting diagnosis.

Glaucoma

Eye condition with elevated intraocular pressure, particularly when conventional treatments are insufficient.

Crohn's Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease with significant symptoms affecting quality of life.

Parkinson's Disease

Neurodegenerative disorder with motor and non-motor symptoms potentially benefited by cannabis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Inflammatory joint disease with chronic pain and limited mobility.

Traumatic Brain Injury

TBI with ongoing symptoms and limitations not adequately managed with conventional treatment.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

ASD with symptoms like anxiety or behavioral issues potentially benefited by cannabis.

Anxiety Disorders

Chronic anxiety conditions significantly impacting quality of life and daily functioning.

Ulcerative Colitis

Inflammatory bowel disease with significant symptoms and limited treatment response.

Severe/Persistent Mental Illness

Conditions with documented medical records and ongoing symptoms despite conventional treatment.

Other Approved Conditions

Physician's discretion for other debilitating conditions with significant functional limitations.

Physician's Discretion:

Physicians can certify patients for "other debilitating medical conditions of the same kind or class as or comparable to those listed" per Florida statute. This means Dr. Monroe has flexibility to certify conditions not specifically listed if she determines medical cannabis is appropriate.

The MMID Application Process

Step-by-Step Process

1

Consult with Dr. Monroe

Schedule a medical evaluation with Dr. Monroe. Come prepared with medical records, documentation of your condition, and any previous treatments tried.

2

Medical Evaluation

Dr. Monroe reviews your medical history, current symptoms, existing treatments, and conducts a physical examination if necessary to determine eligibility.

3

Receive Certification

If approved, Dr. Monroe electronically certifies you to the Florida MMID Registry, creating your official medical certification.

4

Register with State of Florida

You or Dr. Monroe's office assists with applying through the Florida Department of Health's Office of Medical Marijuana Use online system.

5

Receive Your Card

The State of Florida issues your MMID card, typically within 1-3 weeks. Your digital temporary card is available immediately for dispensary use.

6

Visit Licensed Dispensary

With your MMID, you can visit any state-licensed medical marijuana dispensary to purchase approved cannabis products.

What You Can & Cannot Do

✅ What's Legal with MMID

  • Purchase cannabis from licensed dispensaries
  • Possess up to authorized recommended amount
  • Use medical cannabis privately
  • Obtain refills from Dr. Monroe
  • Legally transport between home and dispensary (discreetly)
  • Keep medical records with your physician
  • Discuss cannabis use with healthcare providers

❌ What's NOT Legal

  • Growing cannabis at home (unless authorized by future laws)
  • Using cannabis in public or at work
  • Driving under the influence
  • Sharing/gifting/selling cannabis
  • Using cannabis in schools or government buildings
  • Operating machinery while impaired
  • Violating terms of employment

Important Legal Considerations

Employment Rights

Florida does NOT provide employment protections for medical cannabis users. Employers can still test for cannabis or take action based on use. Consult your employer's policies.

Driver's License

Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal and dangerous, even as a medical patient. Do not drive while impaired by any substance.

Federal Law

While legal in Florida, cannabis remains a Schedule I substance under federal law. This has implications for federal benefits, security clearances, and federal employment.

Criminal Record

Medical cannabis certification does not expunge prior cannabis-related convictions. Each case has different legal remedies available.

Insurance Coverage

Most health insurance plans do NOT cover medical cannabis. Check with your plan. Many costs are typically out-of-pocket.

Out-of-State Travel

Your Florida MMID is valid only in Florida. Do not attempt to transport cannabis across state lines; this is a federal crime.

Public Use Prohibition

Cannabis cannot be used in public places, even by medical patients. Use must be private, at home or another private location.

Card Renewal

Your certification requires annual renewal with Dr. Monroe and re-registration with the State of Florida. Plan accordingly to avoid lapses.

Possession Limits & Patient Count

Patient Count & Possession:

Patient Count: You can have active certifications from up to 3 physicians and maintain active MMIDs in up to 3 locations simultaneously. However, only medications prescribed by Dr. Monroe or your other approved physician are legal.

Possession Limits: While specific possession limits depend on physician recommendation, patients typically can possess a reasonable supply for personal medical use. Dispensary purchase limits and manufacturer packaging restrictions apply.

Physician Certification Validity

Medical certifications from Dr. Monroe are valid for one year from the date of certification. After one year, you must have a follow-up evaluation with Dr. Monroe to renew your certification, and you must reapply to the Florida Department of Health for a new MMID.
